Alcantarea imperialis 'Silver Plum'
Alcantarea imperialis 'Silver Plum' is a magnificent, slow-growing giant bromeliad native to Brazil, highly prized in landscaping for its bold architectural form and dramatic foliage. This species is monocarpic, meaning the central rosette will slowly die after it finishes flowering. However, it produces numerous offsets or "pups" around its base, which can be easily detached and potted to start new plants. True to its nature, the tightly overlapping leaf bases form a central "tank" capable of holding substantial amounts of water, creating a micro-ecosystem that supports local wildlife like frogs. An outstanding focal point for rockeries, poolside borders, modern tropical landscapes, or as a massive statement piece in large outdoor patio containers. It can also be kept as a striking indoor plant if provided with a very well-lit position.
Light requirement: Full sun, part shade.
Water requirement: Low-moderate.
Watering frequency: Water primarily by filling the central rosette "tank" with water. Keep the tank consistently topped up, but allow the surrounding soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil: Free-draining, gritty, or loose soil to prevent root rot. When planting, ensure the crown remains safely above the soil level.
Skill level: Beginner
Growth rate: Slow
Suitable for container gardens: Yes, ideal for indoor pots, balconies, and shaded outdoor areas.
Mature Height: 1 to 1.5m after 8 to 12 years for the plant to reach its maximum structural size
Mature Width: 50-60cm (3-5 years growth) and 1-1.5m (mature growth)
Seasonality: Evergreen
Drought Tolerant: Highly heat tolerant
Frost Tolerant: Must be protected from frost, which can severely damage the foliage.
Wind Tolerant: Highly wind tolerant
Leaf colour: Glossy, gunmetal silver-grey sheen on the upper side, while the undersides flush into a deep, vibrant wine-red or burgundy.
Leaf Variegation pattern: No
Size of leaf: It features broad, strappy leaves arranged in a striking, symmetrical rosette that can span 1-1.5m wide.
Flower Colour: After 3 to 15 years, a mature plant will send up a towering maroon flower spike reaching 2-3m high. The spike produces creamy-white flowers, with the entire bloom cycle lasting up to 18 months
Flower Shape: Small, cluster
Flower Fragrance: Fragrant
Flower Season: Warmer months
