Kentia Palm
The Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana), also known as the thatch palm, is a highly popular, elegant, and durable evergreen palm native to Lord Howe Island, off the East coast of Australia. It is completely non-toxic to pets and children, making it an excellent hassle-free houseplant. It is widely considered one of the most wind and salt-tolerant feather-leaved palms you can plant in coastal or tropical landscapes. A Kentia Palm must be highly mature to bloom—typically taking at least 15 years of age before it produces its first set of flowers and subsequent fruits- a special treat for patient people!
Light requirement: Thrives best in bright, indirect sunlight. Harsh, direct summer afternoon sun can scorch its leaves.
Water requirement: Moderate
Watering frequency: Water consistently but allow the top 2–5 cm of soil to dry out completely before watering again.
Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil.
Skill level: Beginner
Growth rate: Slow
Suitable for container gardens: Yes, suitable for large tubs or indoor planting
Mature Height: 2-3m indoors, 4-10m outdoors
Mature Width: 1-1.5 indoors, 2-3m outdoors
Seasonality: Evergreen
Drought Tolerant: Moderate once established
Frost Tolerant: Light frost tolerant; young plants may need protection.
Wind Tolerant: Very wind tolerant. However if kept indoors, keep away from the direct blast of heating vents, heaters, or forceful air-conditioning units, as these indoor "winds" lack humidity and will rapidly dry out the foliage, leading to crisp brown tips and edges.
Leaf colour: Bright to medium green
Leaf Variegation pattern: No
Size of leaf: The Leaflets (Pinnae) 30-45cm long and roughly 3-5cm wide. They droop elegantly downward, giving the palm its soft, weeping silhouette. Fronds can grow up to 2-3m.
Flower Colour: Subtle white, cream, or greenish-brown colours
Flower Shape: Branched inflorescence among stems
Flower Fragrance: Mild
Flower Season: Summer
