Apple - Dwarf 'Jonathon' (Malus domestica) 25L

$105.00

The Dwarf 'Jonathan' Apple (Malus domestica 'Jonathan') is a compact, highly productive heirloom variety grafted onto special rootstocks (like M26) to keep it small while producing standard, full-sized fruit. First described in the US in 1826, it remains a backyard favourite across Australia due to its intense flavour, juicy white flesh, and space-saving growth habit.

Fruit Colour: Striking deep red blush over pale yellow-green skin, with yellowish-white flesh.
Fruit Shape: Round
Fruit Size: Medium-sized
Flavour: Incredibly, crisp, juicy, and offers a finely balanced sweet-tart flavour profile.
Fruit Season: Mid to late season, with fruit ripening heavily from February through April depending on local climate conditions.
Cropping Habit: Dwarf varieties generally live and produce fruit for 15 to 20 years under ideal conditions.

Best Uses: Fresh eating, lunchbox fruit, salads, light cooking. Highly regarded as an excellent "all-rounder" apple, superb for eating fresh off the branch, baking into pies, stewing into apple sauce, or freezing

Light requirement: Full sun
Water requirement: Moderate

Watering frequency: Water twice a week during spring and summer fruit development, reducing to weekly or as-needed watering during winter dormancy.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile loams with a neutral pH range of 5.5 to 7.0. It dislikes waterlogged soils or "wet feet".
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate
Growth rate: Moderate

Suitable for container gardens: Excellent. Its restricted root system allows it to thrive long-term in large pots, tubs, or half-wine barrels.

Mature Height: 1.8 to 2.5 metres
Mature Width: 1.5 to 2.5 metres

Seasonality: Deciduous

Drought Tolerant: Moderate once established
Frost Tolerant: Moderate; requires some winter chill for fruiting but tolerates light frost. Needs a cool winter with 400 to 1,800 chilling hours to reliably set fruit. Due to its winter chilling requirement and low tolerance for high humidity, it is not recommended for coastal Queensland or Northern New South Wales.
Wind Tolerant: Moderate; benefits from shelter during flowering

Leaf colour: Bright, deep green during the active growing season (spring and summer).
Leaf Variegation pattern: No

Size of leaf: 5 to 10cm in length and about 3 to 6cm in width.
