Apricot – Dwarf Fireball (Prunus armeniaca) 25L
The Dwarf Fireball™ Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) is a popular, low-maintenance grafted dwarf fruit tree tailored for small suburban backyards, courtyards, and large pots. Highly valued for its exceptionally early harvest, it allows home gardeners to pick ripe fruit weeks ahead of traditional orchard varieties. Because it is a prolific bearer that sets heavy clusters of fruit relative to its dwarf framework, installing a permanent stake is highly recommended to support the branches under crop weight.
Fruit Colour: Exceptionally smooth, clean, deep orange skin.
Fruit Shape: Round freestone fruit
Fruit Size: Medium-sized
Flavour: Firm, dark orange flesh boasting a classic, sweet, and juicy traditional apricot flavour.
Fruit Season: Crops mature remarkably early, typically from late November into December across most Australian regions. This early ripening helps the crop escape peak summer bird and fruit fly pressures.
Cropping Habit: Moderate. Strictly self-fertile (self-pollinating), meaning a single tree will happily set fruit on its own. However, planting a second compatible apricot or plum tree nearby will noticeably increase your total yield
Best Uses: Superb for eating fresh straight from the branch, as well as preserving, stewing, freezing, jam-making, and drying.
Light requirement: Full sun
Water requirement: Moderate to high during fruit development
Watering frequency: Regular; consistent moisture required during flowering and fruit swell for best fruit quality. Keep the soil consistently moist until the root system is well-established.
Soil: Needs well-drained, fertile soil. When planting, ensure the graft/bud union remains completely above the soil level to prevent rot.
Skill level: Easy-Intermediate
Growth rate: Moderate
Suitable for container gardens: Yes, suitable for large containers with pruning and care.
Mature Height: 2-2.5m
Mature Width: 2-2.5m
Seasonality: Deciduous
Drought Tolerant: Moderate—high once established.
Frost Tolerant: Moderate (Tree) / Low (Blossoms)
Wind Tolerant: Low-moderate
Leaf colour: Spring & Summer: A vibrant, rich bright green to deep emerald green with a smooth, slight satin sheen on top and a paler matte green underneath. Autumn: The canopy transitions into striking, warm ornamental tones of golden-yellow, bright orange, and soft red before the tree goes fully dormant for winter.
Leaf Variegation pattern: No
Size of leaf: 5-9cm in length and 4-7cm in width.
