Apple - Dwarf 'Granny Smith '(Malus domestica) 25L
The Dwarf 'Granny Smith' Apple (Malus domestica) is a compact, space-saving version of Australia’s most famous heirloom apple. Originally discovered in New South Wales in 1868, this cultivar produces full-sized, crisp, and tart green apples on a tree scaled down perfectly for backyard gardens, patios, and container planting.
Fruit Colour: Striking, bright grass-green skin speckled with small, distinct white dots
Fruit Shape: Round to slightly conical.
Fruit Size: Medium to large fruit, typically 7 to 8 cm in diameter.
Flavour: : Distinctively tart, acidic, and exceptionally juicy. If left on the vine until a slight yellow blush emerges, the flesh sweetens significantly for fresh eating.
Fruit Season: March, April, and May. Expect for the tree to fruit 2 to 3 years from planting.
Cropping Habit: Moderate to heavy crops for a dwarf variety. Dwarf varieties generally live and produce fruit for 15 to 20 years under ideal conditions. Dwarf Granny Smith crops far more heavily if cross-pollinated with a compatible companion apple tree that blossoms at the exact same time.
Best Uses: Fresh eating, lunchbox fruit, salads, light cooking. Celebrated as a global standard for baking, pies, and cider because the crisp flesh retains its firm texture during cooking.
Light requirement: Full sun
Water requirement: Moderate
Watering frequency: Water twice a week during spring and summer fruit development, reducing to weekly or as-needed watering during winter dormancy.
Soil: Thrives in a wide variety of soils (clay, loam, or sandy) provided there is good drainage
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate
Growth rate: Moderate
Suitable for container gardens: Excellent. Its restricted root system allows it to thrive long-term in large pots, tubs, or half-wine barrels.
Mature Height: 2-3m
Mature Width: 1-2m
Seasonality: Deciduous
Drought Tolerant: Moderate once established
Frost Tolerant: Moderate; requires some winter chill for fruiting but tolerates light frost
Wind Tolerant: Moderate; benefits from shelter during flowering
Leaf colour: Rich, deep forest green with a matte-to-semi-glossy finish on the top surface.
Leaf Variegation pattern: No
Size of leaf: 7 to 10 cm in length and 4 to 6 cm in width.
