Grape- Red Globe (Vitis vinifera) 200mm

$50.00

Red Globe is a world-renowned, late-season seeded red table grape variety. Developed by the University of California, it is famous for producing some of the largest individual berries of any commercial grapevine variety. Because the individual fruit clusters are exceptionally heavy (often weighing over 1 kg per bunch commercially), it requires a robust, heavy-duty post-and-wire trellis system to support the massive crop weight.

Fruit Colour:‍ Light pinkish-red to deep ruby-red skin.
Fruit Shape: Round berries
Fruit Size: Massive
Flavour:‍ Crisp and firm flesh with a very mild, sweet, and simple flavor profile. It contains a few large, easily removable seeds.
Fruit Season: Late-season variety, typically ripening from late summer into mid-autumn (late February to April in Australia
Cropping Habit:‍ Red Globe grapevine is defined by average bud fertility but exceptionally high overall yield potential. Because it produces some of the largest individual table grape berries in the world, the physical weight of its crop load is massive.
Best Uses: Summer salads, fresh eating, gifting centerpiece (impressive size and firm fruit), pan-frying and roasting, freezing whole for cocktail ice cubes, baking/sweet tarts as they hold their shape, or as shade in the garden.

Light requirement: Full sun, 6-8 hours. Sunlight serves as the primary engine for photosynthesis; without sufficient daily sun, the berries will remain sour, watery, and lose their signature musky flavor.
Water requirement: Moderate to high. Always apply water directly to the soil using drip irrigation, a soaker hose, or a bucket. Because they have a deep root system, the golden rule for watering grapevines is deep and infrequent, rather than shallow and daily.

Watering frequency: Needs moderate, regular watering—especially during the peak growing and fruiting season.
Soil: Deep, well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 7.0 for optimal growth.
Skill level: Moderate.
Growth rate: Fast, highly vigorous growth rate. To channel its high growth rate into fruit size rather than endless trails of leaves, severe annual winter pruning is mandatory. Cutting the previous season's growth back to short fruiting spurs (leaving 2 buds per spur) resets the vine's dimensions and ensures its explosive spring energy goes directly into sizing up its heavy, plum-sized grape clusters.
Suitable for container gardens: Use a 50cm-60cm wide and deep container (60-75L). Choose terracotta, half wine barrels, or light-colored resin pots and use structural support. A mature Red Globe crop is heavy so the pot must be placed directly against a sturdy brick wall, a heavy structural fence, or a reinforced pergola framework where the main branches can be tied down securely.

Mature Height: 2-5m when trained onto a standard garden structure.
Mature Width: 2-3m

Seasonality:‍ ‍The fruiting and harvest seasonality for Red Globe grapes spans from late summer into mid-autumn, with the fruit ripening for picking between February and May across Australia. However, in regions that experience high summer heat accumulation, photosynthesis accelerates… and the berries store sugars faster, moving the harvest season forward into late February and March.

Drought Tolerant:‍ Drought-tolerant once they are fully established
Frost Tolerant:‍ Fully frost-tolerant when they are completely dormant during the winter.
Wind Tolerant: Moderate wind tolerance but require solid physical support and protective structural boundaries to prevent crop damage.

Leaf colour: Spring; bright, pale chartreuse green. Summer; rich, vibrant medium green. Autumn; glowing mix of golden yellow, bright amber, and deep copper-red before shedding entirely for the winter months.
Leaf Variegation pattern: No.

Size of leaf: 18cm in length & 16cm in width
