Grape- Flame Seedless (Vitis vinifera) 200mm
The Flame Seedless grape (Vitis vinifera 'Flame Seedless') is a highly popular, vigorous, and heavy-bearing red table grape cultivar. It is renowned globally as one of the most common red grape varieties found in commercial grocery stores and is also widely grown by home gardeners. It is a hybrid crossing of Thompson Seedless, Cardinal, and other Vitis vinifera varieties. A newly planted grapevine typically takes 2 to 3 years of growth before it establishes a strong enough root system to support a significant fruit harvest.
Fruit Colour: Deep red
Fruit Shape: Round; crisp skin
Fruit Size: Medium
Flavour: Grape is firm, crunchy, and has juicy pulp; sweet flavour with a subtle hint of tartness.
Fruit Season: Summer to early Autumn.
Cropping Habit: Produces medium-to-large, well-filled, conical bunches
Best Uses: Fresh eating, table grape. Because of its high sugar content, it is also one of the leading varieties dried to make raisins
Light requirement: Full Sun; Flame Seedless requires consistently hot, dry summer days to develop its deep red colour and high sugar content. A cooler summer will delay ripening.
Water requirement: Moderate
Watering frequency: Needs moderate, regular watering—especially during the peak growing and fruiting season.
Soil: Well-draining soil; neutral soil (pH 6.6–7.3)
Skill level: Moderate. Because this variety is incredibly vigorous, it must be hard-pruned during its winter dormancy (July–August). Proper pruning ensures the vine channels its energy into fruit production rather than just growing leaves.
Growth rate: Fast; in deal hot, sunny conditions, a healthy vine can put on 1-2m of new stem growth in a single summer season
Suitable for container gardens: It can also be grown successfully in a large pot (at least 40–50cm wide) fitted with a strong stake or climbing ring.
Mature Height: 4-6m (trained on a trellis/ fence)
Mature Width: 3–4m
Seasonality: Peak Season (Best Flavour): January to March, crops are in abundance, meaning the fruit is at its sweetest & crispest.
Drought Tolerant: Highly drought-tolerant once fully established
Frost Tolerant: It is highly frost-tolerant once established.
Wind Tolerant: Low to moderate wind tolerance; best with some shelter
Leaf colour: Seasonal Leaf Colour Cycle: Spring (Budburst); the emerging leaves start as a soft, translucent pale green with a slight bronzy or pinkish tint along the edges and veins. Summer (Growing & Fruiting); once mature, the leaves turn a rich, medium-to-dark green with a smooth matte finish on top. The undersides of the leaves are slightly paler and may have a faint, fuzzy texture. Autumn (Post-Harvest); as the weather cools and the vine enters dormancy, the foliage shifts dramatically. True to its "Flame" name, the leaves transform into a vibrant display of golden-yellow, bright orange, and striking coppery-red. Winter (Dormancy); the leaves dry to a brittle brown and fall off completely, leaving the woody grey-brown vine bare.
Leaf Variegation pattern: No
Size of leaf: 7.5-15cm, in both length and width. The leaves are heart-shaped (cordate) and deeply divided into 5 to 7 distinct lobes. They feature a sharply toothed or jagged (dentate) margin all the way around the border. The upper surface of the leaf blade is smooth and matte, while the underside often displays a light, fuzzy or downy texture.
