Fig - Ficus carica 'Deanna Genoa' 6L

$35.00

The Deanna Fig (often called Deanne in Australia) is an exceptional, commercial-quality variety originally developed by Dr Ira Condit at the UC Davis/Riverside breeding program. Bred specifically to replace the classic Calimyrna variety, it is highly sought after for its massive fruit size (frequently over 100g), excellent split resistance, and reliable heavy cropping. It features a notably tight, small "eye" (ostiole), which serves as a natural barrier to block out insects, minimise internal souring, and prevent rainwater damage. Strictly self-fertile (Common type), meaning you only need to plant one single tree to get full fruiting results. Be mindful and do not plant an in-ground fig tree within 5m of home foundations, concrete paths, retaining walls, ceramic pipes, or septic lines. Their powerful roots can lift concrete and compromise underground plumbing.

Fruit Colour: Green figs that ripen into an attractive pale yellow-green or lemon tone. The flesh is a striking strawberry, amber, or light red pulp with a smooth, juicy texture.
Fruit Shape: Large, heavy, massive fruits that resist splitting
Fruit Size: 50g to 100g+
Flavour:‍ Belonging to the honey-flavour group, it yields a delicate, smooth sweetness with floral depths and a mild seed crunch.
Fruit Season: Crops reliably across summer and autumn.
Cropping Habit: Heavy cropper.
Best Uses: Perfect for eating fresh off the tree, adding to salads, adding to pizzas or cakes, jams and chutneys, drying, stewing & poaching.

Light requirement:‍ Require a full sun position to sweeten and ripen the fruit properly.
Water requirement: Moderate

Watering frequency: Provide deep, regular watering once or twice a week during the hot fruiting season, then dial back significantly as the tree enters winter dormancy.
Soil: Plant in well-draining, highly fertile soil with a preferred pH between 6.0 and 7.3.
Growth rate: Fast, vigorous, habit that naturally forms a broad, rounded, dome-shaped canopy.
Suitable for container gardens: Yes but require maintenance as potted figs have a restricted root zone and dry out very rapidly under the Australian summer sun.

Mature Height: 3-5m
Mature Width: 3-5m

Seasonality: Deciduous

Drought Tolerant: Highly tolerant of drought once established,
Frost Tolerant: Highly tolerant frost once established
Wind Tolerant: Moderate

Leaf colour:‍ Spring & Summer (rich, deep matte green to medium forest green) and Autumn (bright, clear golden-yellow).
Leaf Variegation pattern: No

Size of leaf:‍ Notably large and bold, often measuring 20 to 30 cm in both length and width on a vigorous, mature tree.
