Senecio rowleyanus (String of pearls) 200mm basket

$25.00

Senecio rowleyanus, commonly known as String of Pearls, is a unique trailing succulent prized for its spherical, bead-like leaves that cascade down over the sides of hanging planters. Native to the arid regions of South Africa, this eye-catching evergreen perennial functions as both a creeping groundcover in nature and a striking houseplant indoors. A healthy, mature String of Pearls holds a significant amount of water in its round beads. When fully watered, a large hanging pot can easily weigh 2 to 4 kilograms. Ensure your ceiling hooks and hanging baskets are rated to hold this weight securely. Please note: Toxic to pets and humans, the plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are toxic if ingested.

Light requirement: Bright indirect light to part shade. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun, which can sunburn the delicate green beads.
Water requirement: Moderate

Watering frequency: Only water when the potting mix is completely dry all the way to the bottom. The round leaves store water efficiently; overwatering is the fastest way to cause root rot.
Soil: Rich, well-drained moisture-retentive soil
Skill level: Moderate
Growth rate: Fast in warm humid conditions
Suitable for container gardens: Yes

Mature Height: Trailing Length indoors, the strands typically grow 60-90cm long. In ideal wild conditions, they can cascade up to 1 or 2 metres.
Mature Width: When planted in hanging baskets, the plant will grow to fill the entire surface diameter of the pot (commonly 15-25 cm) before spilling over the edges to cascade downward. In natural environment, the String of Pearls grows as a creeping groundcover that spreads horizontally to form dense mats up to 90 cm wide.

Seasonality: Evergreen

Drought Tolerant: Moderate
Frost Tolerant: Low
Wind Tolerant: Low to moderate in protected positions

Leaf colour: Features a uniform, vibrant bright green to pea-green colour. Each bead has a thin, translucent dark green stripe running down the side (the "epidermal window".
Leaf Variegation pattern: No

Size of leaf: 6mm, almost perfectly spherical.

Flower: When happy, it produces small, white, daisy-like composite flowers in spring or summer. These small blooms feature prominent reddish-purple stamens and emit a light, sweet scent reminiscent of cinnamon.
