Please note: This variety is sold in plugs, not pots.
Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as Mondo Grass, dwarf lilyturf, or monkey grass, is a hardy, evergreen perennial native to East Asia and features dense tufts of arching, strap-shaped leaves. Despite its common name, it belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) rather than true grasses. It is highly favored in landscaping as a dense, low-maintenance ground cover, lawn substitute, or border edging. It is one of the most reliable lawn alternatives or groundcovers for dark spots under dense tree canopies where normal turf grass dies.
Light requirement: Thrives in part shade to full shade. Can tolerate full sun, but hot afternoon exposure may burn the leaf tips.
Water requirement: Low to moderate.
Watering frequency: Water regularly during establishment, then only during extended dry periods.
Soil: Grows easily in a vast range of soils, but its single absolute requirement is good drainage.
Skill level: Easy
Growth rate: Moderate to fast. Spreads reliably via underground rhizomes and tuberous roots to form a lush, carpet-like effect.
Suitable for container gardens: Yes.
Mature Height: 20-30cm
Mature Width: 20-30cm
Seasonality: Evergreen
Drought Tolerant: High once established
